A few important design considerations regarding functional, user-friendly, and technical qualities of large urban furniture.
How do we best design to naturally foster conviviality?
Create inviting spaces that use unusual angles or curves where several people can gather to sit. – Introduce such staggered gathering spaces that encourage, yet do not compel eye contact – Arrange seating in asymmetrical and dispersed patterns not conforming to typical efficiency constraints. Ensure use of comfortable choice of design and materials.
How do we build for long-term serviceability?
Design corners and edges for strength and durability (e.g. rounded because they less fragile) – Conduct material strength tests and consult with several materials professionals. Avoid gaps (e.g., wooden slats) that serve as nests for chewing gum or other debris.
