For the occasion of the redevelopment of the Castle Courtyard and the 4th Wheat and Bread Festival of 2018, the Echallens City Council wanted to integrate an emblematic, familiar, and broadly appealing design related to the city’s identity, directly into the new pavement of the courtyard.
The choice of the wheat was obvious. The Studio Vaudou was in charge of the design and the drawing, in collaboration with the City Council. Four ears of wheat were used in order to represent the 4 wheat and bread festivals that took place each decade from 1988 to 2018.
Because the pavement project was required to be self-financing, a subscription was launched. For the price of 100/200 CHF (individuals/companies) the donor has their name engraved in a paving stone. Reaching a total of 900 cobblestones sold, the subscription exceeded financial expectations.
