In the workshop, I soak dry clay with water to reconstitute it. A mixture of water and clay was left behind and an interesting texture emerged. This texture starkly resembles the bottom of the amazing Solfatare crater, located in Pozzuoli, west of Naples—where sulphur fumaroles and bubbles of burning air rise to the surface of the flat crater floor, sometimes watery, sometimes dry.
I was deeply impressed by my visit of the Solfatare, a geological place where the world below and above meets—a mythical place, with a cave used as an oracle of Apollo. The alcoves with fumaroles built in roman times are still used today for purification.
